Photocatalytic Technology

Photochemistry is a technique that enables complex organic reactions to be carried out efficiently. However, it is often overlooked by pharmacologists due to the limitations of light absorption as described by the Bouguer-Lambert-Beer law. In order to overcome this limitation, scientists have combined photochemistry with flow chemistry to ensure a uniform irradiation of the narrow channels. In this way, all the reaction mixtures will be uniformly irradiated, whereas in a batch protocol only the outer part of the vessel will receive a sufficient number of photons for the reaction to take effect.

Nowadays, photocatalytic technology is gradually being applied in the production of existing APIs and intermediates. Photocatalysis technology refers to achieve efficient oxidation of saturated carbon-hydrogen bonds in organic compounds under visible light irradiation with the use of cheap and available cerium-based catalysts and reagents. Therefore, high yields of oxidation products can be obtained without the application of expensive precious metal catalysts and high temperature and pressure conditions.   • Heterogeneous catalysts can be immobilized inside the small reactor volume with the advantage of less complicated workup and product separation
  • In the case of photochemical reactions, small reaction volumes can be fully irradiated within the residence time in the reactor during the residence time in the reactor with the advantage of higher conversion and selectivity due to less over-irradiation and continuous degradation.
